SAND STONES - 2020
Carved Navajo Sandstone
The two heart forms were carved by patiently rubbing them against each other, without any other tools.
They began as two rounded Navajo Sandstone river rocks from southern Utah. The warm colors and swirls in the sedimentary stone layers resemble the grain and growth rings of wood. The darker layers of dense iron deposit which are harder aided in the process.
I worked on this piece outdoors as I moved across country between California and Minnesota, and NYC during the pandemic. At the time, i was more drawn to quietly work by hand. In this I found a more grounded intimacy and connection to material.
Like the heart, on its own, and in relationship with another, it is an evolving work in progress.
