<< RETURN TO TALISMAN WORKSHOP

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Can I take the whole workshop in one day instead of two?

Yes, you can… Though the two days is encouraged, as it is designed to allow more time for you to both develop your idea and absorb the skills on the first day. On the second day, you will have time to refine your piece, and not rush the experience.
Taking a creative rest in between days can make a big difference in a Talisman feeling fully charged and finished.
It also gives more time to connect with the group.

You can also split the workshop across two different weekend sessions if it works better for your schedule.

Do I need to come with an idea?

No, you don’t. It is an intuitive process, and many ideas come from getting into contact with the materials and process.
I often get ideas from the the character of the stones, and many ideas come as I engage with the process and movement. You absolutely can come with an idea, or even something that you have been thinking about leading up to the workshop

I’m not an artist?
Can I really do this?

Yes, you can! … Most people are much more skilled and creative than they think.
If you can write your name, you have the building blocks of drawing. Curiosity and care are the most important ingredients.

Why do you incorporate a movement meditation?

Sculpture is an embodied practice. There is an often untapped creativity that lives in the unconscious mind of our body. Somatic movement is a way of activating and connecting with the deeper imagination. We want to infuse this energetic state of being into the Talisman this by warming up the body, and contacting this part of our imaginations.

Can I bring my own stones?

Yes, you can bring them either to investigate working with, or as inspiration if you like.

I have a large collection of stones to choose from that are generally easier to carve than ones that you might find out in the world.
Also, semi-precious stones are harder than you can easily work with hand tools.

Can kids do the workshop?

Yes, though they must be accompanied by an adult.
I have taught these skills to children age 11 and older. They have had a great time, and took to carving quite easily.
With students younger than high school age, I suggest a special parent and child workshop.
Email me if you are interested in setting up a session.

Is the studio ADA accessible?

Unfortunately no, the elevator does not run on weekends. There is an elevator that runs during the week
